Utilities & Energy operates and maintains the District Energy Plants, Electrical Distribution, Gas, Water, Storm, and Sanitary systems of Auburn University.

The Energy Management Department works closely with clients, operations, and maintenance departments to ensure the efficient operation of both campus buildings and central plants.

Utility & Energy Departments

plant operations

Plant Operations operates and maintains the District Energy Plants and their distribution systems. These systems provide the chilled water, hot water, and steam used for building cooling and heating as well as the heating of domestic water. Plant Operations also maintains the water treatment programs for the District Energy Plants and building (heating and cooling) secondary loops.

electrical distribution

Electrical distribution oversees the primary electrical power throughout campus. They operate and maintain the 12 kV Substations and the distribution system for Auburn University. Over 90% of the electrical distribution system is located underground.

utility services

Utility Services operates and maintains the University’s domestic water, natural gas, sanitary sewer, and storm utility systems. They perform utility locates, GPS, documentation, and mapping services for all University owned utilities.

energy management

Energy management works to ensure the efficient design and operation of both campus buildings and central plants. They have developed an Energy Reduction Strategy and use these goals to implement projects that reduce energy usage.
