Lewis Thomas

For nearly 20 years, Willie “Lewis” Thomas, Groundskeeper II with Facilities Management’s Landscape Services department, has been helping make Auburn University look its best. Since joining Facilities Management in 2006, Lewis has worked with just about every team within Landscape Services, giving him a depth of knowledge and experience that few can match. Over the years, he has become a familiar and respected presence across the department, known not only for his strong work ethic but also for the positive attitude and sense of humor he brings to work each day.

One of Lewis’ greatest contributions is the knowledge he has gained through years of hands-on experience. Having worked in many different areas of Landscape Services, he has developed a deep understanding of what it takes to maintain and enhance Auburn’s campus. Whether preparing grounds for major events, maintaining high-visibility areas, or handling the day-to-day work that often goes unnoticed, Lewis brings consistency and expertise to every task. His long-term perspective helps ensure that Auburn’s campus remains welcoming and beautiful for students, employees, families, alumni, and visitors alike.

“Lewis consistently shows dedication through his strong work ethic and commitment to getting the job done right. No matter the challenge, he maintains a positive attitude and helps keep morale up among the team. His upbeat personality and willingness to support others make a difference every day.”

Colleagues also appreciate Lewis’ willingness to share what he knows. Coworkers describe him as someone who is always willing to answer questions, offer advice, and help others succeed. Newer employees especially benefit from his experience, learning not only the technical aspects of the job but also the pride and care that go into maintaining Auburn’s campus. His willingness to support others has made him an important resource and mentor within the department.

“Lewis encourages growth by sharing his knowledge and experience gained from more than two decades of service. He is always willing to answer questions, offer advice, and help others learn new skills, which makes people feel confident and supported in their roles.”

Just as memorable as Lewis’ experience is the positivity he brings to the workplace. Coworkers consistently describe him as kind, approachable, and fun to be around. He builds strong relationships across the department and has a natural ability to lift spirits and keep people smiling, even on challenging days. Whether helping a teammate, sharing a laugh, or entertaining coworkers as the Facilities Holiday Lunch “Dancing Santa,” Lewis helps create the sense of community that makes Facilities Management a great place to work.

“Lewis is very likeable and fun to be around. He has been here long enough to know what needs to be accomplished, maintenance wise, daily. He has a great relationship with fellow employees, supervisors, and managers.”

Chris Channell, Supervisor, Landscape Services

Lewis’ impact can be seen not only in the appearance of Auburn’s campus, but also in the people he works alongside every day.
