There are some people who make a workplace feel a little more welcoming simply by being part of it, and Margrit Tate is one of those people. As Coordinator for the Waste Reduction and Recycling Department (WRRD), Margrit spends her days supporting Auburn’s campus, but the impact she has on the people around her is what stands out most. She genuinely enjoys connecting with others and takes the time to build relationships across Facilities Management. Whether it’s stopping to catch up with a coworker, checking in on an employee, or volunteering to help with an event, she has a way of making people feel like they matter.
One thing that quickly becomes clear when working with Margrit is that she rarely sits on the sidelines. If there’s a committee that needs members, an event that needs volunteers, or a project that could use an extra hand, she’s often among the first to step forward. Not because she’s looking for recognition, but because helping comes naturally to her. She sees opportunities to contribute and takes them. Over the years, that willingness to jump in wherever needed has benefited not only WRRD, but Facilities Management as a whole.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a project, event, committee, or initiative that Margrit didn’t volunteer to help with. She’s always willing to jump in wherever she’s needed and never hesitates to lend a hand. If you need help, she’s one of those people you know you can call.”

Just as important is the way she supports the people in her department. Margrit wants employees to succeed, and she invests the time and energy to help make that happen. She checks in, offers encouragement, and helps people work through challenges when they arise. More than one person shared that she helped them feel more confident in their role simply because she was willing to listen, answer questions, and provide guidance when it was needed. Those actions may not always be the most visible part of her job, but they leave a lasting impression.
“Since I started, Margrit has consistently checked in to ensure I felt comfortable, supported, and equipped to succeed in my role. She encourages me during busy seasons, reminds me to maintain balance, and is always willing to offer guidance when needed. Her support has helped build my confidence, and I know she is someone I can rely on.”

Margrit also brings a perspective that helps others navigate change. One quote a colleague used to describe her mindset is “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” That outlook is reflected in the way she approaches her work and supports those around her. Challenges are met with patience, flexibility, and a focus on finding a path forward. Rather than becoming discouraged by obstacles, she helps others stay focused on what can be done next.
“Margrit demonstrates dedication through her consistent willingness to take ownership, anticipate needs, and ensure tasks are completed thoroughly and efficiently. She maintains a focused, can-do attitude even when managing competing priorities or challenging situations, and she is always willing to help others.”
Joan Hicken, Manager, WRRD
At the end of the day, what makes Margrit special is not any one accomplishment or project. It’s the way she shows up for people, day after day. Her genuine kindness has made a difference for countless coworkers, employees, and campus partners. Facilities Management is a better place because of people like Margrit who care deeply about their work and the people they work alongside. Thank you, Margrit, for the many ways you support WRRD, Facilities Management, and Auburn University!
